KisMAC is one the best wireless discovery tools available. It features a wide range of uses and is very similar to Kismet, a similar Linux feature. The program was made for network security professionals and is not commonly used or permitted for novices.

It is a free application which passively scans networks and supported cards such as AirPort Extreme, AirPort and other third party cards on the Mac OS X. It can also discreetly crack some WPA and WEP keys and exploit their flaws.

KisMAC has also been used as a means to test a network in order to ensure they do not contain weak passwords. The software is also used to test or audit the vulnerability of a Wi-Fi network and its level of security. It can be used to build HotSpots, for GPS, confirming a channel for use and can also be played around with by advanced computer users.

How To Use KisMAC

Outlined is a detailed, easy and straightforward way in which to use KisMAC successfully.

   1. It is best to restart the computer in order to have KisMAC run properly. This is done to enable the system to load all original port drivers.
   2. Download the development code. Compile it.
   3. Insert text in the appropriate fields in order to block the format into the terminal. It is best to insert text in one line instead of multiple lines during this process.
   4. Open the Finder, once step 3 has been completed, and locate the KisMAC source folder. Open the folder and find the kismac.app icon. This is what you have created by doing the first few steps and will enable the software to work in conjunction with the Mac OS more passively.
   5. There are three different options within the terminal
                  One option enables the program to facilitate the download and will send you to the KisMAC source folder. This process is done at the Home level.
                  The second option will change the direction the path of the source file and lead it towards the directory named kismac-source directory.
            The third option compiles the source only.
   6. It is important to read all source material that is available with KisMAC software as it is pertinent to understand it before attempting anything. KisMAC is mainly for professionals who already have a clear understanding of the program.
